A guide to heel heights, from desk to dinner
Kitten, block, mid or high: what each heel height is good for, and how to choose a pair you will actually wear.

The right heel can carry you comfortably from a morning meeting to an evening out. The wrong one stays in the box. Height is only part of the story, so here is what each kind is best for.
Kitten heels, about 3 to 5 cm
A small, slim heel that gives you lift without strain. Kitten heels are elegant at work, easy on long days, and the most forgiving choice if you are not used to heels. They look polished with tailored trousers, midi skirts and simple dresses.
Block heels, about 5 to 8 cm
A wider heel spreads your weight and keeps you steady, which makes block heels the practical favourite for events where you will be standing or dancing for hours. They work well on uneven ground, a real advantage at an outdoor party.
Mid heels, about 6 to 9 cm
The everyday dressy height. A mid heel lengthens the leg and suits most outfits, from a corporate suit to a cocktail dress, while staying comfortable enough for an afternoon.
High heels, 10 cm and up
Made for occasions. Stilettos and high pumps are glamorous with evening gowns and celebration looks. If you love the height but not the ache, look for a small platform under the toes: it reduces the real slope of the shoe.
Choosing a pair you will wear
- Think about your day first. Long hours on your feet call for a lower or wider heel.
- Check where the heel sits. It should be directly under the centre of your heel, not behind it.
- Try heels on in the evening, when your feet are at their largest.
- Walk on a hard floor before you decide. A good pair feels steady from the first step.
Most wardrobes need just two pairs to cover almost everything: a comfortable block or kitten heel for day, and one beautiful high pair for the nights that call for it.
